Medical Benefits: Employees who are furloughed are eligible to extend their group medical
coverage under COBRA for 18 months at a cost.
Conrail will cover the full cost of an agreement employee’s medical
coverage pursuant to the terms of the Employee National Health and
Welfare Plan (the “Plan”) for four months following the month in which you
were furloughed. For example, if you were furloughed in May 2009, the
cost of your medical benefits will be covered in full by Conrail for the
months of June, July, August and September 2009.
Then, under the terms of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), if you were furloughed between
September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009 starting on the fifth month
after you were furloughed you may elect to continue COBRA coverage at
the following rates:
· 35% of the full cost of your COBRA medical benefit premium for the
next 5 months; and, after that
· 100% of the full cost of your COBRA medical benefit premium for
the remaining 9 months.
Using the same example from above, if you were furloughed in May 2009,
you would be eligible for COBRA coverage from October 2009 through
February 2010 at a cost of 35% of the full COBRA premium rate, and from
March 2010 through November 2010 at the full COBRA rate.
